Canon offers locking mode dial for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D

Canon has issued a service notice for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D offering a paid-for option to replace the cameras' mode dial with a redesiged lockable version. Similar to the one seen the company's latest EOS 60D DSLR, the mode dial features a centre button which has to be pressed to allow a change of exposure mode. This option will be available from December 6 and for a cost of $110 in the US. The European service charge is to be confirmed.

Sony updates NEX-VG10E to autofocus with Alpha lenses

Sony has issued a firmware update for its NEX-VG10E camcorder that enables autofocus with Alpha-mount SLR lenses equipped with SSM or SAM motors. Covering 14 lens models, AF compatibility also requires a separate update for the LA-EA1 Mount Adapter. The firmware is available now for free download from Sony's website.

Panasonic releases TZ10, FP3, FP2 and FP1 firmware updates

Panasonic has released firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-TZ10, DMC-FP1, DMC-FP2 and DMC-FP3 digital compacts. Version 1.2 for the TZ10/ZS7 improves the camera's GPS measurement speed. The latest firmware versions for the FP1, FP2 and FP3 improves the performance of the red-eye removal function. The updates are available for download from Panasonic's website.

Pre-Photokina 2010: Nikon has released the D7000 mid-level digital SLR. Housed in a magnesium alloy body, the feature-rich camera incorporates a 16.2Mp CMOS sensor, faster 'Expeed 2'-branded processor, 921k dot 3.0" LCD and can record 1080p24 full HD movies. It features the company's latest 39-point AF system with 3D tracking and 2,016 pixel RGB metering sensor. It will start shipping with the 18-105mm VR kit lens from October 2010 at a retail price of £1299.99.

Pre-Photokina 2010: Nikon has announced the Speedlight SB-700 flashgun. With a guide number of 38 (at ISO 100 at 120mm on an FX camera), it is a more powerful replacement for the SB-600, gaining the operation and handling improvements introduced with the SB-900. Like the SB-600 it offers wireless control and similar recycle times. Its multi-step auto zoom offers extended reach from 24 to 120mm, rather than the 600's 24-85mm. Physical features includes a rotating head, built-in bounce card and a supplied diffuser.

Canon has introduced updated versions of two of its professional telephoto lenses, in the shape of the EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS II USM and the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM. Both feature completely new optical designs, along with lighter weight construction employing magnesium alloy and titanium. Sub Wavelength Structure coatings are employed to minimize flare, plus water-repellant Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements. A new IS mode has been added that activates stabilization only during exposure, alongside a 'Power Focus' mode for video shooting.

Sony unveils SLT A55 and A33 with translucent mirror technology

Sony has unveiled the SLT A55 and SLT A33, the first pair of cameras to incorporate the company's translucent mirror design. The Single Lens Translucent (SLT) cameras offer live view with full-time fast phase-detection AF whether in stills or movie shooting. This is achieved by having a fixed, semi-transparent mirror that redirects a small amount of light onto the AF sensor while allowing the rest through onto the main imaging sensor. The A55 is built around a 16.2MP sensor while the A33 features a 14.2MP unit.

Novoflex releases Nikon G to Canon EOS mount adapters

Novoflex has announced the EOS/NIK-NT lens adapter for using Nikon F mount lenses without aperture rings on Canon EOS bodies. The -NT version differs from the existing EOS/NIK adapter through the addition of a lever that lets users control the aperture on Nikkor G-series lenses that do not have any external aperture controls. The adapter provides a mechanical connection between the lens and the body but retains automatic metering for aperture priority mode and allow focusing to infinity.

Two months after announcing its development, Sony has launched the NEX-VG10E - an E-mount camcorder that becomes the worlds' first consumer-grade HD camcorder with interchangeable lenses. Although appearing under Sony's Handycam brand, rather than Alpha, it retains a lot in common with the Alpha NEX series. It features the same 14.6MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor but is capable of recording 1080i video at a higher, 24mbps, bitrate.

The lens, originally announced at the PMA exhibition in February 2010, offers a faster, image stabilized alternative for APS-C users wanting to upgrade from their kit lens. It is now available in Canon mount with Pentax, Sony, Nikon and Sigma-mount versions expected 'in the coming weeks.' The lens will sell with a recommended price of $980.
