Canon has issued a service notice for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D offering a paid-for option to replace the cameras' mode dial with a redesiged lockable version. Similar to the one seen the company's latest EOS 60D DSLR, the mode dial features a centre button which has to be pressed to allow a change of exposure mode. This option will be available from December 6 and for a cost of $110 in the US. The European service charge is to be confirmed.

With a guide number of 38 (at ISO 100 at 120mm on an FX camera), it is a more powerful replacement for the SB-600, gaining the operation and handling improvements introduced with the SB-900. Like the SB-600 it offers wireless control and similar recycle times. Its multi-step auto zoom offers extended reach from 24 to 120mm, rather than the 600's 24-85mm. Physical features includes a rotating head, built-in bounce card and a supplied diffuser.

Both feature completely new optical designs, along with lighter weight construction employing magnesium alloy and titanium. Sub Wavelength Structure coatings are employed to minimize flare, plus water-repellant Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements. A new IS mode has been added that activates stabilization only during exposure, alongside a 'Power Focus' mode for video shooting.
